Dealing With A Roof Leak

One of the most significant problems that homeowners can have is a leak in the roof. Unfortunately, many homeowners have never dealt with roofing issues and don't really know what to do when their roof starts leaking. If you're starting to see the signs of a leaky roof, there are a few things that you need to do. Here's a look at what you need to know about dealing with roofing damage and leaks.

Assess The Severity Of The Condition

The first thing you need to do is evaluate the severity of the leak. This will help to dictate what course of action you need to take immediately. If you're just starting to see a leak come through the ceiling, you can mitigate any further damage by attaching a tarp over the affected section of the roof to keep moisture off the roof and out of your home.

If, however, the water has soaked through your ceiling or you're now missing tiles from the ceiling due to water damage, you'll want to cover that area of the ceiling with plastic sheeting or something similar as well. This is important because it not only keeps the water out of your house, but it forms a partial barrier against mold and mildew as well.

Cover The Roof Properly

When you cover the affected area of the roof, you need to be sure that you do it correctly. This means investing in tarps and enough two-by-four blocks of wood to stack two blocks per section. Wrap the tarp around one of the two-by-four blocks, then nail the wrapped one to another one that has already been nailed to the roof. Repeat this process until you've secured all four sides of the tarp over the area. That way, you have a barrier on the surface of the roof to help keep moisture at bay.

Call A Roofing Contractor

Once you've taken steps to mitigate the emergent situation, you then need to reach out to a local roofing contractor. He or she can come out and evaluate the roof to determine the source of the leak. Once the source is identified, your roofing contractor will recommend a resolution. You may be able to fix the problem by simply resealing the roof, or you may need to have the affected section of the roof replaced entirely.
